Research Interests

My long-term research goal is to advance the parameterisations of the distributed mesoscale Hydrologic Model (mHM) and its Multiscale Parameter Regionalization (MPR) framework. I initiated the development of mHM and MPR, which we have since continued to advance as collaborative modelling frameworks. Our aim is to represent the subgrid variability of land–vegetation–atmosphere interactions and generate scale-consistent parameter fields at high spatial resolution, from local to global scales.

The resulting multiscale modelling system should provide robust and seamless predictions of streamflow, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and other water fluxes and state variables across spatial scales. Addressing this challenge is essential for reducing predictive uncertainty and improving predictions of extreme hydrological events under changing climatic and environmental conditions.

My current research focuses on the monitoring, modelling, and forecasting of droughts and floods across spatial and temporal scales, including continental monitoring through the German Drought Monitor (GDM) and the European Drought Monitor (EDM), as well as regional (HS2S) and global (WaterSIS) hydrological forecasting. This work aims to improve the understanding and prediction of hydrological extremes under changing climatic and environmental conditions. These capabilities also place our group among the few modelling groups worldwide able to provide annual global hydrological simulations in support of the WMO State of Global Water Resources reports.
